How to Stay Calm and Confident During a Job Interview

We've all been there: the sweaty palms, the racing heart, the "what-if" thoughts running wild before a job interview. Whether you're a Virtual Assistant or a Business Owner, interviews can bring out the nerves in anyone. But fear not, with the right mindset and tools, you can transform that anxiety into confidence.

Research the company & practice your answers

One of the biggest causes of interview anxiety is fear of the unknown.

  • What if you don’t know enough about the company?

  • What if you freeze when they ask you a tough question?

The solution is simple: prepare.

Take time to research the company, understand its mission, and review the job description thoroughly. This will allow you to speak confidently about how you fit into the role. The more you know, the less room your brain has to invent scary scenarios.

For Virtual Assistants, this is also true when preparing for client meetings. The more you know about their business, the smoother your interactions will go.

Calm your nerves with deep breathing

When we get nervous, we tend to breathe shallowly, which signals to our brain that we’re in danger.

Deep breathing can reverse this panic response and help you regain control. Try breathing in for four seconds, holding for four seconds, and then exhaling for four seconds.

Doing this a few times will calm your nervous system, making it easier to think clearly.

Whether you're preparing for an interview or a Virtual Assistant call, breathing techniques can instantly ground you and reduce anxiety.

Shift your focus to make the interview a two-way street

Instead of thinking, “I hope they like me.”

Try focusing on the question: “Do I like them?”

This simple shift puts you back in control. You’re not just trying to win them over, you’re also determining if the role, company, or client is the right fit for you.

You’re a professional, and you’re there to make sure this is a mutually beneficial opportunity.

This mindset is just as valuable for business owners interviewing potential Virtual Assistants.

Think of the interview as an opportunity for you to see if this person is the right fit for your team.

It’s not just about them impressing you, it’s about assessing if you can work together well in the long run.

Boost your confidence with body language

Feeling nervous? Stand tall, shoulders back, and place your hands on your hips for two minutes before the interview.

It may sound silly, but this power pose boosts confidence-related hormones, making you feel more like a boss and less like a nervous wreck.

Take a moment to think before answering hard questions

When you’re asked a tough question, don’t rush to answer immediately.

It’s perfectly okay to pause for a moment and gather your thoughts.

You can even take a sip of water or say, “That’s a great question, let me think about it for a second.”

This pause shows that you’re thoughtful and confident, not unprepared.

For Virtual Assistants conducting interviews or meetings, this also applies. When clients ask tough questions, it’s okay to take your time and deliver a more considered response.

Release nervous energy before the big moment

If you’re feeling jittery before your interview or client meeting, take a quick five-minute walk or do some jumping jacks.

Getting your body moving helps release nervous energy and prepares you mentally to be more focused and relaxed during the conversation.

For Virtual Assistants, doing this before a client call can help shake off any tension and clear your mind for a productive session.

Flip your thinking to visualize success

When your brain starts spiraling with “What if I fail?” thoughts, immediately counter them with “What if I succeed?”

Visualizing a positive outcome can trick your brain into feeling more relaxed and confident.

This mindset shift doesn’t just apply to job interviews, it works for every challenging situation, including meeting new clients, presenting your ideas, and even negotiating pay rates.

Anxiety doesn’t have to be the boss of you. By preparing well, breathing deeply, and shifting your perspective, you can walk into any interview, whether you’re the one being interviewed or the one conducting it, with your head held high.

You’ve got the skills and mindset, now just let them shine!
